History

1952 - Start as the 'State Library' under the Ministry of Culture on 1st June 1952 and estabilshed at Jubile Hall (now Defence Museum) on Shwedagon Pagoda Road, Yangon.
   
1953 - Changed the library name from the 'State Library' to the National Library on 1953. National Library was based on Public Free Library which included the rare collections of Kinwun Mingyi's, Bagan Wundauk U Tin's collections and the researchers U Myo and U Myin collections.
   
1962 - Moved to No. 166, Pansodan Road on 2nd July 1962.
   
1964 - Moved  to the 3rd floor of Municipal Building on 5th August 1964.
   
1965 - Opened the library at the Municipal Building on 4th January (Independence  Day) 1965.
   
1984 - Moved again to the 1st and 2nd floor of the No. 53, Six-storeyed building on the Strand Road and opened the library on 24th December 1984.
   
1999 - Moved to the new National Library building at No. 18/51 (A), Corner of East Horse Race Course Road  and Lay Daunk Kan Road, Tarmwe Township, Yangon on 29th May 1999 and gave library services on 15th June 2002.
   
2008 - Moved completely to the two 3 storyed buildings, address of  No. 85, Thiri Mingalar Yeikthar Street, Kabaraye Pagoda Road, Yankin Township, Yangon and opening to the public on 20th September 2008.
